The Contribution of Korean Language to Korean Civilization:
A Study of Korean Pronoun and Designation

Languages used in society reflect the way of thinking of its speakers through the languages’ structure and usage. The languages’ structure and usage influence the language use by its speakers in daily communication and interaction based on the context. The way people communicate and interact in home, school, office, and governmental environment should be different because the language they use consists of values and terms in which they are appropriate to use. Since the language influences the communication and interaction patterns in society, it can also contribute to the society development and change. South Korea has rapidly developed in the late four decades. It is developed in any sectors such as economy, politic, and culture. This development is correlated with the people’s way of thinking and live. Since language can be used to investigate the way of thinking and live pattern of its speakers through its use in communication and interaction, Korean language is very reasonable to be analyzed to know how Korean language’s values influence the people’s communication and interaction and how it contributes to the Korean civilization development. Two of the aspects of Korean language that can be analyzed are Korean pronoun and designation which imply the Korean values such as intimacy, politeness, discipline, and nationalism that contribute to the development of Korean civilization. This paper would like to discuss the values of Korean language focusing on Korean pronoun and designation and explain how those values influence the Koreans’ way of thinking and live pattern through its use in communication and interaction thus it contributes to the Korean civilization development.
